Tangkay wins MVP

MANILA – After several frustrations, former Southwester University Cobra Jojo Tangkay was finally voted Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the 2006 Philippine Basketball League Heroes Cup yesterday at the San Andres Gym.

The 29-year-old Tangkay, who led the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters to a 2-0 lead over Magnolia Dairy Ice Cream in the ongoing best-of five championship series, accumulated a total of 344.80 points to wrap up the top honor.

Fadeaway jumper

“At last it came to me. After those frustrating years, I told myself I would never expect this award anymore. If it will come I’ll be very happy,” said the Cebuano Tangkay, who was the leading MVP contender in 2004 but lost to Peter Jun Simon in the PBL Platinum Cup. “I thank all who voted for me.”

Tangkay’s fade away jumper in the final 26.3 second pulled Rain or Shine to a 72-66 lead, which led to the Game 2 win and a 2-0 lead in the championship series yesterday.

The former Sta. Lucia Realty player got 198 from the media votes to edge close rivals Arwind Santos and Fil-Am Kelly Williams of Magnolia, Jayson Castro of Hapee Toothpaste and teammate Jay-Arr Reyes.

“I’m very happy now and I will always cherish this award. What I want to do now is to win the championship. The MVP is nothing if we can’t win the PBL title,” said Tangkay, who hopes to return to the professional league as soon as six-time champion Welcoat Paints joins the PBA in October.

Tangkay tallied 358 points in the statistical category, the highest among the contenders, followed by Castro with 320, Williams with 291, Santos with 281 and 279 for the 6-foot-7 Reyes.

Mythical team

Castro, Williams, Santos and Reyes joined Tangkay in the Mythical five, while Harbour Center’s Robert Reyes and Joseph Yeo, Hapee’s Robert Sanz and Gabriel Espinas and Joe Davance of Toyota made up the second Mythical team.

The commissioner’s choice awards also were Jay-Arr Reyes for the Quantum Leap honor, Yousif Aljamal of Rain or Shine for the True Gentleman award, Jeff Chan of Magnolia for the Instant Impact plum and Robert Reyes of Harbour Center for the Defensive Stopper.

Other awardees were Mark Moreno of Hapee-PCU for the Fantastic Freshman honor and Toti Almeda of Granny Goose Tortillos for the Academic All-Star plum.
