USP earns championship slot

THE University of Southern Philippines Baby Panthers won the second finals berth after routing the Hoop It Up Basketball Clinic-backed Cebu Institute of Technology Wildkittens, 84-72, in the final day of the semifinal round of the BAP-Visayas/MLSDF 3rd ML Kwarta Padala Cup Inter-Secondary Championship at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Gym in Punta Princesa last Sunday.

The Baby Panthers secured the slot after powerhouse University of the Visayas Baby Lancers eliminated the University of San Carlos Baby Warriors, 63-58, in the opening match.

UV and USP will play in a knockout championship on Saturday. The champion will advance to the National Students Basketball Championship in Legaspi City on Feb. 24 to March 4.

After a slow start, the Baby Panthers, who were coached by assistant coach Erning Remedio in the absence of coach Camilo Go, had a 23-10 run in the third quarter to take the lead for good.

However, USP found it tough to break the pressure defense of Hoop It Up in the opening half that saw CIT take a 42-39 lead at halftime.

With Hoop It Up playing with impatient, USP cashed in baskets off forced shots and poor shot selection of Hoop It Up in the third period.

Sam Jordan Hermosa scored 23 points and Dennis Earven Ferraren added 18 for USP, while Karenrick de la Cerna topped Hoop It Up with 17.

UV and USC engaged in 13 deadlocks and 17 lead changes before the Baby Warriors lost steam in the final two minutes that allowed the Baby Lancers to complete the semifinal round undefeated.
