Couple ambushed, slain in Mantalongon

A couple on their way to market day was ambushed by a longtime enemy Sunday morning in the southern town of Dalaguete, Cebu.

Danilo Carteciano, 39, and his wife Apolonia, 46, did not survive.

However, their son Michael, 20, lived to tell investigators that it was his father’s enemy, Tomas Vargas, who shot his parents in Sitio Lapa, Barangay Mantalongon, Dalaguete town.

Michael alleged that Vargas was armed with an Ingram submachine gun.

He was driving the motorcycle with his father seated between him and his mother when they saw a rock with some wire tied around it blocking the road.

Michael said he stopped to move it when Vargas suddenly emerged from the sayote plants by the roadside and fired at Danilo.

Michael sped off but his parents failed to ride on the motorcycle and ran for their lives.

Vargas allegedly chased them until both remained motionless.

Danilo was wounded on his chest, torso and cheeks while Apolonia died of gunshot wounds in her head and torso.
She was four months pregnant.

According to investigator PO3 Cleto Pia, Vargas suspected the Cartecianos of being behind the killing of his son last year.

They are also checking if Danilo was a witness or complainant against Vargas in an attempted murder case.

Police are eyeing a land dispute as the motive for the killing, as both are farmers.

Vargas fled the scene but left behind pieces of evidence.

A team led by SPO2 Francisco Lloras recovered three empty shells from a 9mm pistol, a black baseball cap, a holster, a slingshot and three cigarette butts.

When they approached Vargas’ wife, she said there would be no end to the conflict.

“Baws-baws ra gyud ni amoa,” she reportedly told investigators.

Though Michael was sure it was Vargas who killed his parents, Pia said they wanted to find more witnesses to strengthen their case against him.

Police are preparing a double murder complaint against Vargas.

Asked what their chances are of arresting him, Pia believes Vargas has not left the mountains of Dalaguete. (MEA)
