Cabaero: Angry voices
By Nini B. Cabaero
Beyond 30

The tragedy Saturday, when thousands of people rushed to get into the stadium for the “Wowowee” game show, elicited strong reactions from people not only in Manila but throughout the country and in different parts of the world.

The Sun.Star website at www.sun-star.com.ph uploaded a message board Saturday afternoon for people to write their comments on the stampede tragedy. Not one minute after the board was uploaded, the first message was posted. Then, a flurry of messages came in from people angry that the stampede even happened.

“Nicole” (inse_iyay@yahoo.com): “The stampede was a disaster waiting to happen. Such situation should have been avoided in the first place if the organizers of the event had handed out tickets earlier and they could have advised those who cannot be accommodated to just try their luck next time. But I guess the organizers wanted to show television viewers how big a crowd they can gather. It is unfortunate that those people who were desperate to alleviate their poverty had to compromise their dignity and were made to suffer by lining up for several days and be exposed to the elements, then ultimately be crushed to death due to the organizers’ failure to foresee such an inevitable situation.”

“Geoff Domingo” (micionero711@ya-hoo.it): “We are not a poor country, but we have a poor value system. The tragedy reflects the lack of quality education, governance and true solidarity. Though these game shows try to extend a glimmer of hope in alleviating one’s state of poverty, they are also culpable for capitalizing on this state of thought. But they are not solely to blame for what had occurred. But all of us who are passive and play numb to the current state of life of our fellows (are to be blamed).”

“Manny David” (mannygdavid@ya-hoo.com): “If ABS-CBN is really serious about alleviating poverty in the Philippines, it should finance barangays to help citizens using the money generated by its shows. After all this is said and done, I believe Willie Revillame would aspire for a government position. And no wonder the Philippines is in deep trouble because those who are running the country are mostly showbiz personalities exploiting the bakya crowd.”

“Noypi” (wishfully@hotmail.com): “The tragedy showed the world how desperate our poor Filipino brothers and sisters are. Hoy! Mga taga-gobyerno dyan, makonsensya naman kayo. Anong reflection sa inyo nito? Mabuti kayo di na kailangan pumila para makatikim ng swerte dahil nakahiga na kayo sa swerte-swerte.”

“Juan dela Cruz” (macmagnus@earth-link.net): “Once again, the world sees the horrible poverty in the Philippines as the rich Filipino ignores 80 percent of the fellow hungry Filipinos. Shame on the Palace and the rich. Shame, shame.”
