LINGAYEN, Pangasinan – The Central Visayas Private Schools Athletic Association (Region 7) team made sure it didn’t miss the wagon of opening-day medal winners as it secured two medal at the start of the athletics competition in the 2006 Prisaa National Games at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center.

Aside from medals in athletics, Region 7 likewise also its campaigns in table tennis, badminton and volleyball on bright notes with victories.

Only the Region 7 Women’s basketball team, which is composed of players from the University of Cebu Lady Webmasters and the University of San Carlos Lady Warriors, failed to register a conspicuous debut.

UC’s Janice Ann Bautista and University of San Jose Recoletos’ Jefferson Querubin came out as Region 7’s first medallists in the weeklong event after garnering the bronze in their respective competitions.

Bautista finished third in Women’s high jump as she cleared 1.30 meters.

Landing the gold was Region 4-A’s Kayce Maala, who cleared an obstacle of 1.45m. The silver went to Mylene Marquillina of Western Visayas (Region 6), who posted a record of 1.33m.

Querubin, on the other hand, bagged third spot in Men’s shot put with his record of 12.10m.

A chance

While UC’s Anthony Santillan gave Region 7 a chance at a medal after making it to the final round of the Men’s 100m event.

In volleyball, the University of San Jose Recoletos-powered Men and Women’s teams of Region 7 displayed their dominance as they dominated their respective rivals from the Caraga Region.

The Men’s team had an easy time over Caraga, 25-6, 25-21 and 25-17. Region 7 Women’s volleyball team also inked a walk-in-the-park victory, 25-9, 25-13, 25-6, over Caraga.

The only disappointment for Region 7 on opening day was the Women’s basketball team, composed mostly of players from UC with two reinforcements from USC, as the Cebuanas fell to archrival Western Visayas (Region 6), 42-37.

The Region 7 lady cagers, though, gave the Hiligaynon team a fright in the homestretch as they slashed Region 6’s 25-4 first half edge to just three points, 34-37, in the dying minutes of the game. But the Western Visayas lady dribblers didn’t cave in to pressure, tightening their trapping defense as they stood their ground to preserve the win.

In table tennis, Region 7 team also debuted successfully in both divisions.

In the Men’s event, Region 7 got one over Region 4A (Calabarzon), 2-0, after Emmanuel Motel Jr. of UC defeated his foe in the Singles event and later paired with Glendo Nayre to blast their foes.

Singles ping-pong

In the distaff side, Gloria Belandres knocked out her Region 1 rival in the Singles event and later teamed up with Diane Ramos in Doubles to give Region 7 a 2-0 victory.

Meanwhile, the other bets of Region 7 will have their turn today at the start of almost all of the events including swimming, which will be held in Dagupan City’ss Olympic-size swimming pool.

In the opening ceremonies, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, who gamely left the shade of the grandstand to feel the sun’s heat felt by the athletes on the ground, stressed the importance of education through private schools despite the governments focus in enhancing the public school system of the country.

GMA, who also mentioned the Manny Pacquiao mania that gripped briefly the country the past several days, also doled out to different beneficiary’s the P4,000-worth vouchers in implementing the first steps of the government’s Palm Priming Program, where the government will hand out to deserving public school recipients a voucher worth P4,000, which could be used by the student when enrolling in a private school college or university.

“Una sa lahat, nais ko po’ng sabihin sa inyong lahat na ang private schools ay importante sa ating kinabukasan. At sana sa mga kampeon pagkatapos ng Prisaa ay may makasama sa Philippine team doon sa Beijing Olympic Games,” Arroyo said.

But the more colorful speech, however, came from Prisaa National President Dr. Gonzalo T. Duque, who spoke before the president.

Duque, also the Prisaa Region 1 president, elicited applause from the crowd after bravely saying that the Filipinos should avoid aping the present Philippine government officials who are always bickering with each other all the time.

“Wa’g nating gayahin ang mga pulitiko natin na palagi na lang nag-aaway. Let us send them a message through the Prisaa na ang hardwork and teamwork will always work,” said Duque. (JSV)
