Tagbilaran, Mandaue to fete boxing heroes
Tagbilaran City is preparing a hero’s welcome for WBO Asia Pacific Jr. lightweight champion Czar Amonsot tomorrow following his victory over Mexican Christian Favela last Saturday in the US.
In his debut fight in Las Vegas, Amonsot passed his acid test despite fighting against a heavier opponent.
Tagbilaran City Mayor Dan Neri Lim is going to fete the city’s rising star during his State of the City Address tomorrow, while a motorcade is waiting for the 20-year-old ALA gym fighter upon his arrival at the city port before he will be join the city council before noon.
Press con
Amonsot and Z Gorres are scheduled to arrive today from the US. The two boxers will talk about their US debut in a press conference at the Cebu Grand Convention Center at 11:30 a.m.
Mandaue City is also looking to fete Gorres for his triumphant exploits over Jose Alfredo Tirado, winning after 10 rounds.
Aside from Gorres, Mandaue City Sports Development Commission executive director Cheryl Ouano is also planning a grand welcome for the city’s boxing heroes — Rodel Mayol, who just won the WBC eliminator bout against Mexican Lorenzo Trejo in Mexico last Jan. 28; Randy Suico, who scored a technical knockout win over Japanese Ryuhei Sugita to keep his OPBF super-featherweight title and Malcolm Tuñacao, who kept his OPBF bantamweight title after a split draw with Kohei Ohba in Nagoya both held last Sunday.
E-mail report
Former JMP British trainer Tony Martin, who booked Gorres and Amonsot to a fight with Guilty Promotions ,sent an e-mail to the ALA Boys manager Antonio Aldeguer detailing what transpired during the card. Aldeguer furnished Sun.Star-Cebu a copy of that e-mail.
“What a complete success and total sellout the promotion was, with both of the boys (Gorres and Amonsot) performing at their very best,” Martin, who now lives in Las Vegas said.
“Czar had a bloody fight, created by a couple of headbutts by the opponent in the first and third rounds. Blood coming from the opponent’s head. By the end of the eighth, Amonsot’s blond hair was red from the opponent’s blood. Czar threw a few low blows of which, he needs to correct, but other than that, it was a very good and hard fight. The crowd loved him,” Martin said. (RCM)
