Ng: Google can

You probably use Google to do your search in the Internet. Here are some cool tips you may want to try:

1. Google can be your calculator. If you key in a math problem, Google would be able to compute it. Try typing 2 + 2 or 8 x pi (p). Or try typing the question, “what is 55 percent of 200?” You will get an answer.

2. Remember to put quotation marks to get correct answers. For example, when you type, “The search is over,” Google will return the Web page about the song by the rock group Survivor. If you type in the sentence without quotation marks, Google will probably return with an assortment of unrelated pages. Putting quote marks tells Google to look for occurrences of the exact phrase as it was typed. So if you are looking for lyrics, people’s names or expressions like “to be or not to be,” putting quotation marks help.

3. Google can be a dictionary. Type in “define” then the English word and Google will return with the definition.

4. Get images and pictures. Google is reputed to archive over a billion images. When you are looking for a photo of Raki Vega, you can type in the name, and just click “images.”

5. Google can give you maps and satellite views. Just type the destination (in the United States, type the city and State or just the zip code). You will get a map and directions from maps. Google.com as well as from Yahoo and MapQuest.

6. Google not only indexes the Internet but also is starting to scan thousands of books and making it available for search online. Just go to print.google.com and you will find information from actual books that Google has indexed. You can probably read it online if the work is not copyrighted.

7. Google can be an indexer of News. Just go to news.google.com and it will provide up-to-date news on politics, business, technology and entertainment. When you do a search on Google news it will look for the most recent stories from 4,500 global news sources.

8. Google can give you information about the weather. Just type “weather” on the search followed by the name of the city, and Google will provide you the weather advisory or the links to the latest weather news.

9. Google can help you research. This time, go to scholar.google.com and you can now search and tap into thousands of scientific and academic journals.

10. Looking for a word and its synonyms? Type the word in close and open quotation and Google will look for it and its synonyms. For instance, if you do ~auto, Google will look also for cars, trucks, automobiles, and others. This is handy if you don’t know the exact term.

11. Google can help you with translations. If you go to the search page, you will note a “language tools” link. If you click on that, it will provide a service where you can translate text to various languages like French and German. It also offers the ability to translate a whole Web page by simply entering the address of that web page.

12. Google can give you the latest stock quote. Just type the stock ticker symbol into the search, and it will give you the stock quote and graph of the stock listed in NYSE or NASDAQ.

Happy Searching!
