Summer playground
What better way to spend the summer than joining a workshop to be conducted by one of the country’s leading musical theater actors?
Little Boy Productions embarks on a new challenge this summer, discovering and training young performers in Cebu through its first-ever Musical Theater Workshops. The workshops are designed to teach students voice, dance and acting skills, give them performance experience, build a sense of accomplishment and, most of all, have fun. The leading resident actor of Repertory Philippines, Michael Williams, will be based here for the summer to teach two classes: Children’s Musical Theater and Young Adult’s Musical Theater. From April 17-30, participants will be exposed to daily sessions of theater training, which will culminate in a production of a Broadway musical as the final activity. Working and playing together, they develop friendships and a bond that lasts long after the summer has gone. Time spent on stage and in classrooms is also time spent discovering a world of shared interests and support. Beginners as well as experienced performers are all welcome.
Workshop instructor will be Michael Williams, who was an original cast of Miss Saigon in London. He also went on to play Lun Tha (the romantic lead) in the touring and West End productions of The King and I. Since coming back from London in 1992, he has established himself in the lounge and trade show circuits but continued to churn out stellar work in the theater. He was acclaimed for his portrayal of Javert in Les Miserables and many other leading roles at Repertory Philippines. His last collaboration with Little Boy Productions was in the musical Once on This Island where he played the leading role of Agwe, God of Water. Michael also teaches acting workshops for Repertory Philippines’ Summer Workshops but is taking this summer off to teach in Cebu. “We are privileged to have Michael Williams teach the Musical Theater Workshops here in Cebu,” says Hendri Go of Little Boy Productions. “This is a rare opportunity for those looking for quality, professional theater workshops but can’t go to Manila to join the workshops there,” he added.
The workshop fee is P 3,500.00 and is inclusive of all miscellaneous fees, souvenir t-shirt, and tickets to the culminating presentation of a Broadway musical. A board and lodging package is available for participants coming from out of town. Limited slots are available and registration is now ongoing at east, west café at the Ayala Entertainment Center. Please call Hendri at 422-4183 or (0917) 815-5794 or email kuyaig@yahoo.com for more information.
This is organized by Little Boy Productions, the Cebu-based theater company that produced the Manila and Cebu stagings of the musical Once on This Island starring Bituin Escalante, Jett Pangan, Jeffrey Hidalgo, Michael de Mesa, and Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo. Among those who started their professional theater careers with Little Boy Productions are Jing Fegi (currently playing Nala in The Lion King in Hong Kong Disneyland), Christine Fernandez (Search for the Star in a Million finalist), Bong Cabrera (Tanghalang Pilipino Actor’s Company at the CCP), Jude Bacalso, Randolph Libres, and Raki Vega.
