LINGAYEN, Pangasinan – The Central Visayas/Region 7 team jumped to the second place overall after amassing a three-day total of 21 golds, 11 silvers and 25 bronze medals in the 2006 Private Schools Athletic Association National Games here at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center.

Region 6 is two golds ahead of Central Visayas with a gold-silver-bronze total of 23-38-23, while the Davao Prisaa/Region 11 is hot on the heels of the Cebuanos with a three-day tally of 19-19-21.

Leading the gold medal winners of Region 7 was the Men’s badminton team, composed of players from the University of San Jose-Recoletos, which bagged the championship against their foes from Region 4-A.

Region 7’s Ian Mendez led the team to victory with a 15-4, 15-4 Singles over his Region 4-A foe. Completing the successful bid of Prisaa 7 was the tandem of Mendez and Jan Spyro Mijares, who lambasted their rivals from Region 4-A, 15-3, 15-6.

The Prisaa 7 men’s badminton team garnered a total of four golds in the team event as the week-long multi-event meet is using the core medal system.

This means that Prisaa 7’s victory in Men’s and Women’s table tennis the other day yielded a total of eight golds as each team is composed of four players.

Also doling out additional two golds to Region 7 from the table tennis event was the tandem of Glendo Nayre and Eribert Impuesto, who won over Region 6’s Dexter Delenila and Edward Cachumbo in the Men’s Doubles championship, while Region 2’s Ericson and Emerson Cera garnered the bronze.

The Central Visayas chessers likewise posted a golden finish, winning the team gold after beating Western Visayas in the fifth and final round. University of San Carlos’ Kim Steven Yap swept all his five assignments to win the gold medal on board two, while University’s Jose Roble Jr. also pocketed the gold medal on board one.

Swimming also yielded a total of eight gold medals yesterday after the wards of coach Lando Alvarez won the plums in Men’s and Women’s 200-meter freestyle relay in Dagupan City, 15 kilometers away.

The Prisaa 7 Men’s 200m free relay team, composed of Todd Aris Belleza, Ian Rusiana, Andrei Yosef Ynclino and Andrew Dequiña, racked up an aggregate clocking of one minute and 49.20 seconds to win the gold in the event.
