Capitol asks for crime prevention bodies in schools

THE Cebu Provincial Board (PB) calls on all chief executives of municipalities and component cities in the island to coordinate closely with schools in the creation of student crime prevention committees (SCPCs).

DepEd has urged public and private schools to create the SCPCs in their campuses as a way of supporting the government’s crime prevention campaign.

“The creation of Student Crime Prevention Committees in different public and private schools in the country aims to address the increasing number of crimes where students are involved,” said PB Member Jose Mari Gastardo, chairman of the peace and order committee.

He authored the resolution that was passed during last Monday’s session.

Recruitment

Reports have it that fraternities have penetrated different schools in the province, and that the groups are recruiting minors.

Cebu Provincial Police Office Director Vicente Loot had suggested labeling the fraternities as criminal groups so that they will be banned from schools.

The SCPC will be tasked to formulate crime prevention programs, and coordinate with parent-teachers’ associations and school officials for the maintenance of peace and order in the campus.

The student committee will also be tasked to report illegal activities of students on campus.

The local government units should be active in coordinating with the different schools to hasten the creation of these committees, said Gastardo. (MBG)
