LINGAYEN, Pangasinan – The Central Visayas/Region 7 athletics team captured its first gold yesterday in the 2006 Private Schools Athletic Association National Games at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center, even as its swimming team ended its campaign with two more golds at the Dagupan City Pool in Dagupan City.

Christy Sevilleno, Sarah Abucay, Mary Rose Arman and Genalyn Jaum proved to be a winning combination for Region 7 as the quartet yielded four gold medals after topping the Women’s 4x800-meter competition.

Adding another gold at the tracks for Region 7 was Jeppy Lumongsod, who reigned supreme in the Men’s 10,000m walkathon.
Aside from the pair of golds, Region 7 also plucked four silvers and 10 bronze medals in the final day of swimming competitions to bring its total contribution to 13 golds, 11 silvers and 29 bronzes.

Andrew Dequiña accounted for one of Region 7’s swimming golds yesterday as he topped the Men’s 50m breaststroke with a clocking of 33.57 seconds to beat Jinno Salvacion of Region 4 (34.24) and Karl Roger Vincent Jayme of Region 6 (34.61).

Amirabelle Bajar won the other gold as she swam ahead of Region 11’s Shahani Navarro and Region 6’s Rheza Gonzales, winning the Women’s 50m breaststroke in 40.35 seconds.

Winning silvers for the Cebuano tankers were Antonio Yana Jr., Earl Jason Bilangdal, Marlon Galo and Archival Buagas, who finished second in the Men’s 400m medley relay with a clocking of four minutes and 41.81 seconds.

Region 4 copped the gold with an aggregate time of 4:33.94, while Region 6 got the bronze with a clocking of 4:48.56.

Winning the bronze for the Cebuanos at the pool were Andrei Yosef Ynclino (Men’s 200m individual medley and 50m butterfly); the Men’s 800m freestyle relay team of Yana, Bilangdal, Jose Marie Go and Todd Aris Belleza; and the team of Ma. Rhona Ramos, Beverly Vasig, Chesa Furebyre and Aisha Tenorio in Women’s 800m free relay.

The Cebuanos settled for three silvers in Men’s lawn tennis as University of Cebu’s Janjie Soquiño lost to Region 11’s Ronard Joven, 5-8, in the final round.

Soquiño and John Joshua Villa likewise failed to win in the Men’s Doubles after succumbing to the tandem of Region 11’s Joven and Marc Alcoreba, 8-5, in the championship.

Volleyball

In the ballgames, the Region 7 Men’s volleyball team, composed of the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars, continued its streak after annexing its fifth straight victory in the same number of outings.

The USJ-R Lady Jaguars also continued to string along victories after losing just once.

The Men’s team moved a victory shy of topping its bracket after blasting away Region 5 in straight sets, 25-16, 25-13, 25-21. The team will battle Region 4-A today with the winner taking the top spot in the bracket moving on to face the No.2 team of the other bracket in the crossover semifinals.

The Lady Jaguars logged their fourth win in five games after outlasting Region 1, 3-0, to keep on course in their bid for the semis.

Badminton

Region 7 also continued its amazing run in badminton after its Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles and Women’s Doubles teams all entered the semifinal round.

USJ-R’s Ian Mendez registered a 15-4, 15-6 victory over Jestone Septin of Region 12 to advance into the Men’s Singles semifinals.

Irish Olofernes of the University of Cebu, though, wasn’t as lucky as she fell in the quarterfinals against Region 6’s Rosalie Soberano, 3-11, 5-11.

The Men’s Doubles team of USJ-R’s Jan Spyro Mijaes and Solito Flores avenged Olofernes’ defeat as the tandem barged into the semifinals with a 15-0, 15-12 victory over Region 4-A’s Alvarez and Escueta.

The Women’s Doubles team of Armecin and Kara Melanie Montejo won over Region 5’s Arguez and JL Vale, 15-4, 15-6, to also move into the semifinals.

Sepak Takraw

Region 7’s campaign in sepak takraw ended yesterday after Johnmark Taladro, Joseph Rey Castro and Marlou Semblante of Southwestern University lost in the crossover semifinals to Region 6, 18-21, 8-21.
