3 days after turning self in, fratman walks free
Three days after giving himself up to the authority, a member of Tau Gamma Phi fraternity walked out a free man yesterday after the court cleared him of a murder case.
Judge Ramon Codilla of the Regional Trial Court Branch 19 cleared Warren Entera, 26, after a witness testified that he is not the “Waway” referred to in the warrant of arrest.
SPO1 Adonis Dumpit and SPO4 Porferio Gabuya of the Cebu City Police Office brought Entera to the court to return the arrest warrant and supposedly for the issuance of a commitment order against him.
To verify if Entera was indeed the “Waway” in the warrant, the homicide section headed by Insp. Mario Monilar, invited the witness to the court.
Not the one
When presented in court, the witness, however, said Entera was not the Waway identified in the arrest warrant.
Interviewed by reporters yesterday, Entera said he sighed with relief after hearing the witness’ statement.
Entera’s mother, Josie, 62, was elated by the development.
“Dako gyud akong kalipay. Sa una, kakuyaw ang akong gibati kay basin og unsay mahitabo sa akong anak,” said Josie, in a separate interview (I’m so happy. I had feared and worried about what might happen to my son).
Dumpit said he already informed Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña about the development in Entera’s case.
Entera met with Osmeña yesterday afternoon to thank the mayor for ensuring his safety, he said.
Monilar, when sought for comment, explained it was good that the witness showed up to clarify the identity of the “Waway” in the warrant, considering that the accused was only identified by an alias.
Police should not be blamed for including Entera in the most wanted list of fraternity members because they were only relying on the witnesses’ accounts, he said.
Entera surrendered to Osmeña last Friday after learning that his name has been included in the list of fraternity members with arrest warrants.
The mayor had put up a bounty of P600,000 for the arrest of the 10 fraternity members.
Gun-for-hire?
Meanwhile, information received by Supt. Pablo Labra II, chief of the Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Bureau revealed that Aristotle “Aris” Aves, a member of Alpha Kappa Rho is now a gun-for-hire.
Aves is number one in the list, with a P100,000 cash reward for his capture.
The local police already created “Task Force Aves” headed by Insp. George Ylanan. Labra said that Aves is still in Cebu. (JST)
