BOC Mactan collects P67M in one month

A customs official has attributed “high” tax collections for the first five weeks of the year to the heavy competition between two telecommunications companies.

The Bureau of Customs (BOC) Port of Mactan collected P67.5 million from Jan. 2 to Feb. 9, 2006, said Collector Ernesto Urbano.

Digital Telecommunications (Digitel) imported equipment and materials for line expansion and mobile phone accessories and paid P20 million in duties and taxes. Globe Telecom imported the same products and paid P5 million in duties and taxes.

More revenue

“If the competition will continue, we can collect more revenue for the government,” Urbano said.

In January 2006, Urbano said the Port of Mactan collected P36,903,076, higher than the collections of the same period last year.

The Port of Cebu, of which the Port of Mactan is under, was given a collection target of P5.303 billion for 2006. However, Urbano said District Collector Ma. Lourdes V. Mangaoang has yet to give the Port of Mactan its share.

Urbano also attributed the high collections to the vigilance of his subordinates, including the chief of assessment, airport officer-in-charge, deputy collector for assessment, the Mactan Economic Zone deputy collector, and members of the Enforcement and Security Service (ESS) and Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service (CIIS).

Last Jan. 21, Urbano and Mangaoang gave commendations to ESS and CIIS personnel, in the presence of Customs Commissioner Napoleon Morales and Finance Secretary Margarito Teves.

From ESS

From the ESS, commended were Mactan Sector Commander Capt. Hernando G. Anonas, Deputy Sector Commander Lt. Roberto C. Gines, and operatives Taciano R. Cañete and Dominador B. Calibo.

From the CIIS, the recipients were supervisor Franz Angelo S. Muñoz, Intelligence Agent II Constancio C. Ecarma, Special Agent I Ferdinand G. Laraga and Acting Special Agent Nenita A. Bautista.

They were commended for their vigilance that led to the seizure of contraband shipments at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport. (EOB)
