So. Leyte in calamity state for deadly landslide

Torrential rains triggered flash floods and landslides that left 13 people dead in the Visayas and Mindanao.

In Sogod town, Leyte seven road construction workers died when they fell into a 150-foot-deep ravine during a landslide in the mountain barangay of Agas-agas last Sunday.

Three of those killed have been recovered and identified as Vicente Fernandez, Nestor Samar-ca and a certain Anecito.

Six others died from drowning and high blood pressure in the southern provinces of Surigao del Sur and Agusan del Norte in Mindanao.

Anthony Golez, deputy administrator for the Office of Civil Defense, said that since the weekend, 30,000 persons have been evacuated from their homes due to flooding.

The heaps of boulders and mud—100 meters wide and six meters high—that covered the Maharlika road, the only access to Sogod town, hindered rescue and aid operations for families of 12 affected barangays.

“Agas-agas has a landslide fault line, so we prohibited passage through the highway during rains,” Barangay Captain Lito Lopez said. But some took the risk.

The Sogod municipal council already declared the town a calamity area so it can get assistance from other government agencies and the town’s calamity funds can be released fast.

A TV Patrol report also said that in Panaon Island, 15 barangays in the towns of San Francisco and Liloan no longer have water and electricity supply, forcing some of the families to take refuge in a public gym. (AIV)
