Drug suspect slain; 3 cops wounded

A suspected pusher was shot dead while three policemen were injured in a shootout and grenade blast in Barangay Mac-tan, Lapu-Lapu City at 9:15 last night.

Heavily armed Lapu-Lapu City policemen were in the area to conduct a buy-bust against Diego Oyao and his cousin Roberto Auxtero Baring in the interior portion of Mactan proper, about 100 meters from the house of Mayor Arturo Radaza.

Baring allegedly fired the first shot, but got hit in the ensuing shootout. He didn’t reach the Lapu-Lapu City District Hospital alive. Oyao escaped.

Operations operative PO3 Frederick Islit, and PO2’s Jomar Ybañez and Roberto Pepito of the Special Weapons and Tactics (Swat) team were taken to the Mactan Doctor’s Hospital.

Islit suffered a gunshot wound on his chest while Ybañez was shot in the left leg.

Pepito sustained a shrapnel wound in his right calf, after a grenade was allegedly lobbed at pursuing cops.

Lapu-Lapu City Police Chief Louie Oppus, according to radio reports, said last night that the area has been under surveillance for at least three months.

Fiesta

Police decided to conduct a buy-bust because a fiesta was held nearby and they received information that many “buyers” were heading to the area.

Oppus said it was difficult to penetrate the area and learned their subjects were heavily armed.

This is why he sent Insp. Francisco Baguio with an armed assault team and the Swat team in full battle gear.

Diego’s cousin Bo Oyao has been listed as a drug lord and included in the list released by Rep. Antonio Cuenco.

The Oyaos of Marigon-don and Agus have a string of illegal drug cases in the city.

Initial reports stated that Islit first entered the compound to arrest Oyao and was shot at, allegedly by Baring.
This prompted the rest of the operatives to return fire and a shootout ensued.

Suddenly someone lobbed a grenade at the pursuing policemen.

Pot session

Police have yet to identify who threw the grenade.

Three others who were having a pot session also allegedly got away.

Police recovered from Baring another apple type grenade that did not explode.

They also found shrapnel, a short firearm, a Rambo-type hunting knife and shabu paraphernaliaOyao reportedly has an arrest warrant for a drug case.

As for Baring, police said he once served time at the New Bilibid Prisons in Muntinlupa for a murder case.

Cebu Provincial Police Office director, Supt. Vicente Loot has sent Chief Insp. Juanito Enguerra to lead the reinforcement team for Oyao’s arrest. (MEA/With RCT)
