Speak out: Edsa 1 in news gallery By Amado F. Cabaero Cebu City
On the 20th anniversary of Edsa I, I am reminded of my visit to NEWSEUM in Arlington, VA, in 1997 where I noticed the absence in its News History Gallery of any front page of a local newspaper reporting the historic event.
When I wrote the Editor of Freedom Forum, in charge of NEWSEUM, about it, I wondered whether it was because there was no bloodshed unlike that of Tiananmen Square in China that they did not consider the event worthy of being included in their News Gallery.
I also said that to us Filipinos, it was a glaring omission, not to say deliberate exclusion, of what we believed to be the most important achievement in man’s fight for freedom.
For, we said, wherever people died for freedom, history shows that they did not always achieve it. But here the Filipinos seized the moment and in an unprecedented act of courage, won their freedom without a drop of blood being shed.
I have not visited the NEWSEUM again after that but I think that front page is now in their News History Gallery.
