Tuñacao breaks into WBC top 5
Malcolm “Eagle Eye” Tuñacao broke into the top five rankings of the World Boxing Council after keeping his Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) bantamweight belt last Feb. 5 in Tokyo Japan.
Tuñacao, who was ranked under the lighter super-flyweight division prior to his title defense is now the No.5 contender to the title held by Japanese Hozumi Hasagawa, in the ratings released by www.fightnews.com last Feb. 13.
Welcome
It is welcome news for the former world champion, who is among the four boxers from Mandaue City who will be feted by the City Government.
Mandaue City Sports Development Commission executive director Cheryl Ouano said that the motorcade and the handing out of the recognition and award to Tuñacao, Rodel Mayol, Z Gorres and Randy Suico is moved to Friday afternoon.
“We will make it on Friday to allow the city hall employees to witness the rites. At 3 p.m. there will be a motorcade and the awarding rites will be held at 5 p.m. during the flag retreat ceremony,” said Ouano.
Meanwhile, another Cebu-based fighter, Rey “Boom-Boom” Bautista, remained at No.10 in the bantamweight division while stablemate Gorres, is now WBA No.14, IBF No.9 and WBO No.2 super-flyweight contender. His fight for the OPBF 115-pound belt against Thai Waengpetch Chuwatana on March 19 could install him to the top 10 in the WBC.
Defense
Suico, who was ranked No.11 in WBC in January, dropped to No.13 and from WBA No.10 to No.12 despite his successful defense last Feb. 5, when he scored a fourth-round knockout over Japanese Ryuhei Sugita.
Mayol on the other hand, strengthened his hold as the WBC No.1 contender but dropped from No.4 to No.11 in the WBA. His IBF No.3 and WBO No.1 status remained.
Another Mandaue City fighter, Eriberto “Ioka” Gejon, dropped to WBC No.11 and WBA No.3 while Bert Batawang was dropped out of the top 15 ranking in the WBA after losing to Hiroyuki Hasitaka last Dec. 4 in Japan, after occupying the No.7 spot for several months. Batawang however kept the IBF No.3 ranking.
Breaking into the world ranking is ALA Boy Donnie Nietes who is now ranked WBO No.8, while inactive Noel Tuñacao is IBF No.15 minimum-weight contender. Wyndell Janiola has also kept his international rating as the IBF No.11 jr. flyweight contender. (RCM)
