Smart begins trial period for 3G, offers free services
Smart subscribers with third generation (3G) capable handsets can now start enjoying 3G services for free.
Leading wireless services provider Smart Communications Inc. announced today that it is opening its 3G network in selected key cities nationwide, making video calling, video streaming, high speed Internet browsing and special 3G content downloads on its 3G network available on a free trial basis.
This makes Smart the first mobile operator in the country to offer 3G services to the public, the firm said in a statement. The launch comes less than a month after Smart and Nokia signed an agreement for the supply of 3G networks technology equipment and services.
“This is another first from Smart. Simultaneous with our rapid 3G network rollout nationwide, we are taking our 3G commitment to another level by allowing our subscribers to experience for themselves as early as now this new technology,” said Smart president and chief executive officer Napoleon Nazareno.
Trial period
Smart 3G services that can be accessed for free during the trial period are 3G video calling, 3G video streaming, 3G high speed Internet browsing and special 3G content downloads.
The costs of other Smart services are still based on existing rates.
“On top of video to video calls, our subscribers can also have (other) content that includes video clips of popular shows, news reports, short films, movie trailers and the like.” said Menardo Jimenez Jr., Smart’s head for wireless consumer division.
3G technology allows for faster data transmission speeds, making possible high-speed data communications and mobile multimedia services such as video conferencing, audio streaming and mobile Internet.
To avail of the 3G technology, though, a Smart prepaid or postpaid subscriber with a 3G-capable cell phone must be in an area with a Smart 3G coverage. (PR)
