Toral: Competitive outsourcing
By Janette Toral
Digital Filipino

The E-Services Philippines 2006 opens today at the EDSA Shangri-la Hotel in Mandaluyong City. This event is considered as one of the biggest and is participated in by various local government units in the country. The number of foreign delegates, who attend the event to find out what the country has to offer, is also growing.

One of the highlights this year is the showcasing of regional information technology (IT) hubs. The Philippines has reached a stage where it can now boast of a growing number of IT destinations. These places are now giving the likes of Manila, Cebu and Davao a run for their money.

Iloilo now houses four call centers and one medical transcription company.

Bohol, on the other hand, is beefing up its infrastructure and support programs to become an IT destination. Tagbilaran’s Island City Mall is currently in the process of being proclaimed as Bohol’s 1st IT building.

I remember writing in 2000 about Leyte being an outsourcing destination.

One of the biggest companies there is Direct Data Capture that has 1,100 employees involved in business process outsourcing work. There are two more companies have established operations there and are involved in content and software development.

Cagayan De Oro is now being packaged as an IT Goldmine of the Philippines (http://www.cdoitgoldmine.com/). The city already has three call centers, one medical transcription and another software development company.

At present, Naga City has one full-scale digital animation firm, medical and legal transcription service and one outbound call center operating in the said area.

Another city with great potential is Dagupan. At present, Dagupan is well known in the IT sector because of Bitstop, a company offering various high-end IT services, such as webcasting and e-learning, among others.

BUSINESS AND HOBBY. Last week, I made my first sale of jewelry produced by a BeadClubPhilippines.com member. As two of our members have agreed to showcase their jewelry work, there is strong pressure on us to ensure that their products get exposed to the market and are sold.

We learned a lot of lessons on how to come up with a product pricing scheme that certain sectors will find attractive. We also learned to be up-to-date with the times.

The idea of teaching people to learn a potential hobby and make business out of it is still something new and comes with a considerable amount of risk. However, for community organizers, this is where they will learn to take things slow and be diligent.

THANKS. Thanks to American Power Conversion, I’ll get the chance to share the results of IT usage in corporate Philippines study this March 9 in Cebu City. I shall keep you posted once I have the full details.
