Castro back at fiscal’s office

Mary Ann Castro is back at the Office of the Cebu City Prosecutor.

Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez, in Department Order 107 dated Feb. 15, amended an order that assigned Castro full-time to the Bureau of Immigration (BI) last October.

According to the memorandum, she will remain with the BI on a part-time basis. She will “assist said bureau on all legal matters, operation and investigation of administrative cases pending.”

“I’ll be reporting back here (prosecutor’s office) for inquest duties. I won’t be handling any court assignments though,” she said when interviewed by Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.

Castro held three inquest investigations yesterday, her first day back at work.

One of the most “colorful” personalities in the Office of the Cebu City Prosecutor, Castro was detailed to the BI late last year, based on the Oct. 25 order.

At that time, she was the subject of a series of cases filed against her by businessman Jake Yu, whom she also charged in court.

She had also just been fined P5,000 for filching a photo of Yu from court records.

Interesting times

She had just returned from serving a six-month preventive suspension order imposed by the Sandiganbayan for a graft case filed against her by the Office of the Ombudsman-Visayas.

Sources from inside the Palace of Justice say Castro’s return signals the comeback of “interesting times” for the Office of the Cebu City Prosecutor.

Nicolas Sellon, head of the office, only smiled when sought for an interview.

Castro was earlier charged with allegedly receiving settlement money from the suspects in what was then known as the Hong Kong Triad case, which she was prosecuting.

She was again investigated for allegedly trying to muscle a settlement between her brother and businesswoman Emily Rose Kho Lim Chao over the purchase of a truck.

She was investigated yet again for allegedly recommending to court the dismissal of a criminal case that another prosecutor resolved to file in court. (KNR)
