Change in remittance to help smaller parishes

The Cebu a archdiocese is changing its remittance system to accommodate poor parishes and to better serve priests in Cebu.

Two weeks ago, Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal signed a circular that changes the system of contribution remittance in every parish to enable the archdiocese to address the different concerns of the Church.

Part of the circular was the launching of the Priest’s Solidarity Fund next month.

According to an article published in the archdiocese’s weekly publication, Bag-ong Lungsoranon, the new system mandates every parish to remit 20% of its gross parish income every month.

Before, a quota was established for every parish.

“The program aims to change the system in the remittance of contribution in every parish to improve the capability of the local church to sustain the different pastoral concerns,” the article read.

The change will also incorporate the formulation of a financial report and accounting system of a parish’s earnings and belongings.

Health care

Part of the archdiocese’s collection will be allocated as solidarity fund, which will be used to improve health care and insurance services of the priests.

During a press conference for Vidal’s jubilee celebrations last year, Msgr. Achilles Dakay confirmed that health care is one of Vidal’s priorities this year.

Vidal plans to build a three-story building for ailing priests. He also proposed to hold a fun run at the IT Asia Park in Lahug to raise funds for the health care of elderly priests.

The same fund will be used to aid priests who have special assignments, or those who are not assigned to handle parishes.

The system is also set to aid small parishes that are having a hard time coping financially since big parishes are expected to remit more, under the new system.

Vidal approved the circular after consulting members of the Cebu Clergy Congress, which he heads. The new system and the Solidarity Fund were first pushed in 2002. (JGA)
