Arroyo packs 5 events in Cebu visit

President Arroyo will be in Cebu today for the 18th Annual Meeting of the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) Visayas at noon at the Casino Español de Cebu.

She will then proceed to induct the officers of the Kapisanan ng mga Brod-kaster ng Pilipinas (KBP), also at the Casino Español de Cebu.

The President will also visit the jobs fair at Cebu City Sports Center organized by the Department of Labor and Employment (Dole) at 1 p.m.

Grace Diaz, Dole 7 chief of employment promotions division, said the local companies, including establishments from Mactan Economic Zone, and 50 foreign-based recruitment agencies will join the jobs fair.

The event is expected to generate 1,800 local jobs and 8,500 overseas employment.

Among the workers needed abroad are service crew and linemen in the United States, domestic workers in Singapore and restaurant managers in the United Kingdom.

Arroyo had promised to generate 10 million jobs by the end of her term in 2010. So far, about 1.99 million jobs were created through government intervention in agribusiness land development, government funding for small and medium enterprises, as well as housing in public construction.

From the job fair, Arroyo will proceed to Malacañang sa Sugbo at 3 p.m. to officiate the oath-taking of newly appointed cabinet secretaries: Angelo Reyes of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Rolando Andaya of the Department of Budget and Management and Esperanza Cabral of the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

At 7 p.m., Arroyo will attend the 69th Cebu City Charter Day celebration where she will be conferred the title “adopted daughter” of Cebu City. The other awardees are retired Chief Justice Hilario Davide Jr. and world boxing champion Manny Pacquiao.

The Charter Day is this Friday yet but Mayor Tomas Osmeña moved it two days earlier to accommodate Arroyo’s schedule. (EOB)
