Barangay tanod guns down relative of Bulacao bry. chief
A relative of Bulacao Barangay Captain Celerino Cabanca Sr. was shot dead by a tanod during an argument last Tuesday afternoon in St. Jude Acres, Bulacao, Cebu City.
The victim Roger Gaviola, 37, of Sitio Ufeba, Bulacao worked as a dispatcher of public utility jeepneys and tricycles.
Gaviola was calling out to passengers at the parking area for tricycles in St. Jude Acres at 4:45 p.m., when tanod Ramon Flores, riding a motorcycle, arrived and confronted the victim.
Argument
Bulacao tanod Leonides B. Ablaña, who saw the altercation, said the two were arguing when Flores slapped Gaviola and told him to stop being a toughie in the area.
Ablaña said Flores showed an identification card to Gaviola and said, “Gawas pagka barangay tanod, deputized ko sa Citom. Ako’y naa sa gobyerno, ako pay gihimong bati (Aside from being a barangay tanod, I’m deputized by the City Traffic Operations Management. I’m the one in government, but I’m the one who’s made to look bad.)”
Charges
Moments later, he heard a gunshot and saw Gaviola slumped on the ground, Ablaña said in a sworn statement.
With a handgun tucked under his waistband, Flores walked back to his motorcycle and told Ablaña, “Una lang ko nimo bro.”
According to Homicide investigator Roger Nedamo, the bullet hit the left side of Gaviola’s back and went through his right armpit. He died on the spot.
SPO2 Alex Dacua said yesterday they invited Flores to show up to the Homicide Section to shed light on the allegation, but Flores didn’t arrive.
Homicide Section Chief Mario Monilar said charges will be filed today against Flores. (JST)
