Budget shortfall forces city to send lean team to Cviraa

The Cebu City Department of Education will have to select which teams to send to make sure the overall Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association title stays with them when the 2006 meet starts on the third week of March in Tagbilaran City.

Cebu City Schools superintendent Dr. Leonilo Oliva will be forced to trim down a 500-strong delegation of athletes, coaches and officials after Mayor Tomas Osmeña approved only P1.2 million for the city’s athletes.

According to Oliva, they first requested a budget of P2.5-million for the annual regional meet but since the mayor only approved half of the amount, the city will be forced to cut the number of athletes who will vie in Tagbilaran City.

“Right now we are starting to identify what sports would surely contribute for our title-retention bid. Basically we will be sending a lean team because of the budget given to us,” Oliva told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.

“We will just send athletics, swimming, gymnastics, basketball, football, lawn tennis, table tennisand other sports which we are sure to win the gold medals. The others will have to step back,” Oliva said.

Among those who will be left behind are the batted sports.

“The little league, baseball and softball teams will have to be left behind since we are really in dire budget constraint,” he added.

Aside from trimming the number of participants, Oliva is also trying to figure out other ways to cut other expenses.

“Before we will charter an entire trip, now we will just pay per athlete and our buses and other transportation will be ferried separately,” Oliva said.

The P1.2 million will be spent for the athletes’ uniforms, meals and transportation expenses. (RCM)
