Cokaliong ’98, JRJ 2002 survive in Cecaba caging

Cokaliong Shipping Lines ’98 overhauled a 10-point deficit in the third quarter to pull the rug from under Hannah’s Cakes and Decors 2004, 73-62, in the Cebu Eastern College Alumni Basketball Association’s 8th Dr. Chen Lieh Fu Memorial Cup at the City Sports Club-Cebu.

In the other game, JRJ Enterprises 2002 built a dozen-point lead at halftime and used it as a buffer to turn back Juvis Marketing 2003, 68-60.

Robinson Yap had his finest game of the season so far, pouring in 24 points on top of 14 rebounds for Class ’98. Paul Timothy So added 17 points, five steals and three assists, while Elvis Evangelista donated 14 points, 11 rebounds, and three steals as they snapped out of their two-game losing streak and improved to 3-2.

Class ’98 was on the verge of dropping its third straight game as it trailed 46-56 entering the final period, but Yap, So, Evangelista, and Rex Millan sparked a tide-turning 27-6 rally in the windup to snatch the victory.

Christian Espada had 16 points and nine rebounds, but the missing link was Danel Hayag, who was handcuffed to only eight points as Class 2004 suffered its second defeat against five wins.

Later in the day, Michael Lloyd Tan finished with 18 points and John Brian Lo added 16 points and 10 assists as Class 2000 used a furious first half explosion to bomb out Class 2003 and even its win-loss

record to 3-3. Rodnie Ocarol added 14 points for Class 2000, which never looked back after taking a 45-33 advantage at the break.

Joey Catipay came up with season-highs 23 points and 17 rebounds, but his big night was spoiled as Class 2003 crumpled to its fourth consecutive loss in as many starts.

Class 1998 (73) – Yap 24, P. So 17, Evangelista 14, Millan 6, Escoton 6, Co 4, Plaza 2. Class 2004 (62) – Espada 16, Chan 10, Uy 9, Co 8, Hayag 8, Sypongco 4, Mamac 4, Areja 3.
