USC, USP to face Manila champions in national finals

The University of San Carlos Warriors and the University of Southern Philippines (USP) Baby Panthers may find their campaign in the 60th National Students Basketball Championships on Feb. 27 to March 5 in Legazpi City tougher after strong teams hurdled the National Capitol Region (NCR) elimination.

USC, on its first trip to the National Inter-Collegiate Championship after 50 years, will be facing the UAAP champions, National University Bulldogs, who topped the NCR elimination yesterday.

Regular campaigner

Aside from the Bulldogs, USC will also have to contend with NCR runner-up, the Mapua Institute of Technology Cardinals, who are a regular campaigner in the National Colleges Athletic Association. Defending champions University of Perpetual Help-Rizal (UPHR) also qualified.

Other teams who will be pitting skills in the collegiate division are University of Luzon of Pangasinan, Tuguegarao College of Region II, Angeles University Foundation of Region III, San Pedro College of Business Administration of Region IV, West Negros College of Region VI, Bohol Institute of Technology, Eastern Visayas State University of Region VIII, Southern Technical Institute from Cagayan de Oro and University of Mindanao of Region XI, and Northeastern Mindanao College of the Caraga Region.

Meanwhile in Daet, USP will need extra muscle when it plays against a field led by San Sebastian College Red Cubs and St. Clare College of Caloocan City, considered the early favorites.

Meanwhile, the Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP) national congress will be staged on Feb. 27 in Legazpi City, which will be hosted by Albay Gov.Fernando Gonzalez.

Expected to attend the congress are BAP chairman Quintelino Literal, president Joey Lina and members of the executive board, regional directors, different Permanent Commissions, Women’s representatives and representatives of affiliate Leagues’ organizations. (RCM)
