UV Green Lancers lose to FEU Tamaraws

The University of the Visayas Green Lancers, winner of five straight Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. Men’s titles, were brought down to earth after the Universities Athletic Association of the Philippines champions Far Eastern University Tamaraws beat them, 81-71, as both teams ended their elimination-round campaign in the Philippine Basketball Federation Inc.-organized National Students Basketball Championship at the Rizal Memorial Complex yesterday.

The Lancers, who had a tournament high 110-31 win over the University of Nueva Caceres, now must retool their game after the Tamaraws handed them their worst beating since the University of Cebu Webmasters defeated them last September in the Cesafi.

“Defense gave us this win,” said FEU’s Cebuano coach Bert Flores in a text message to Sun.Star Cebu. “We limited the productions of (Mark) Ababon and (Ariel) Mepaña and we were patient in our offense.”

UV had a good start behind the efforts of Mepaña and Ababon that gave the Lancers a slim 23-21 lead in the first quarter.

However, the Tamaraws came roaring back in the next two quarters with Roser Benjamin Mangahas and Jefferi Allan Chan leading the charge as FEU outscored the Cebuanos, 48-32, including a 23-13 blitz in the third to erect a 69-55 lead entering the final quarter.

No top gunner

UV tried to come back in the final frame but all it could manage was a 16-12 production to bow down to the mighty Tamaraws, who played without its top gunner Arwind Santos.

“The boys failed to deliver as expected. It was a pretty good game, but we relaxed in the second and third quarters, that’s why we lost the game. There is still a chance to make it to the championship but we need to work extra hard to overcome whoever we will play in the semifinals,” UV coach Elmer Cabahug said.

The Lancers will play against the No.1 team in Group A, the slot to be contested by NCAA champions Letran Knights and the Philippine Christian University Dolphins today.
