Cherie Gil goes onstage via ‘Doubt’
Cherie Gil is known to be an able and effective villain in movies and on television. This time, Cherie Gil goes onstage as an unlikely heroine in John Patrick Shanley’s controversial and suspenseful play Doubt.
The play recently won four Tony Awards including the award for Best Play as well as the highly coveted 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Doubt continues to play on Broadway to SRO crowds and has become Broadway’s runaway hit of the season.
When asked why she chose Doubt to be her theater project for this year, Cherie, who’s definitely one of the country’s finest and most versatile actresses, said: “I didn’t chose; it was thrown at me! Having won a Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award, how can I go wrong choosing to do the play? I am humbled by the opportunity and I would be stupid to not even try!” She will play the role of Sister Aloysius.
Set against the backdrop of a Bronx Catholic School in l964, Doubt is the story of a strong-minded woman faced with a difficult situation: Should she voice concerns about one of her male colleagues, even if she’s not entirely certain of the truth?
Cherie has been a constant figure in Philippine TV and film whose works have been both critically acclaimed and embraced by the public so much so that her characters have become contemporary icons and the lines she gave to them (like “you’re nothing but a second rate, trying hard copycat!”) are repeated from generation to generation.
This year, while we are seeing her on TV via the highly rated remake of the soap opera Gulong ng Palad, Cherie will also be preparing for the highly anticipated run of Doubt. “I am still in the process of preparing for the role,” she said. “I cannot describe it in words just yet. I am working on the physical character...because it is a real challenge for me to play a 50-year- old woman! I am researching our era in the play and understanding the philosophy of the Sisters of Charity in the 60s. After my bout with the Tsunami, I have learned not to plan anything. I take things as they come...but I do have a lot of desires. Like performing a wonderfully written script like ‘Doubt’ onstage. I would really like to do more of this stuff this year. It gives me an adrenaline rush which I have been longing for but do not get much of from doing soap operas.”
Produced by Atlantis Productions, Doubt will be directed by Chari Arespacochaga, with Mio Infante doing the set and costume designs. ManMan Angsico will write the original music score, while Jonsy Reyes will be in charge of the lighting design. After running in Manila for the entire month of June, Doubt will be staged in Cebu on July 1 and 2 at the Onstage! Ayala Cinema One. Doubt in Cebu is brought to you by Little Boy Productions, the maverick production company behind the hits Once on This Island, Art, and Cebu’s longest-running comedy New Yorker in Tondo.
