Concert for Leyte a success despite absence of Manila-based talents

Despite the absence of homegrown talents who are based in Manila, the concert for a cause last Thursday was a success, with organizers hoping Cebuanos will continue to help the victims of the Southern Leyte landslide.

Tons of relief items from Cebuanos were also shipped yesterday as aid for evacuees from 11 Southern Leyte barangays and for the rescuers who have been digging through mud and rain to look for survivors.

A portion of Mount Kan-abag buried the entire Barangay Guinsaugon in St. Bernard town last Feb. 17, killing more than a hundred people. About a thousand people remain missing, trapped in about 30 meters of mud and boulders.

Cebu City Councilor Gerardo Carillo said today will be the ceremonial opening of eight donation boxes that were placed at the Fuente Osmeña oval during the concert.

Those who watched were asked to donate any amount as entrance fee for the concert, which featured local bands and singers like Chad Borja and Maria Donna, who all refused to ask talent fees.

Rain

Sam Costanilla of the Cebu Provincial Government and former Pinoy Big Brother housemate Angela Calina hosted the concert.

The concert was rained out, but it did not dampen the spirits of the performers, who dedicated what they did to the victims.

Cebu’s fashion designers, models, and Ms. Cebu Tourism winners also showed up to add spice to the activity.

Carillo said that because the request was made on short notice, Cebuano talents like Raki Vega, Sheryn Regis and Jimmy Marquez were not able to come.

Capitol, Cebu City Hall, the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas and other concerned groups decided to hold a concert only last Tuesday.

Also, Cebuanos were asked to send a text message to Globe Telecommunications as a form of help for the landslide victims.

Those interested should text HELP LEYTE to 2340. The P2.50 that will be deducted from your load will go to the fund intended for the Leyte landslide victims. (RHM)
