Coup jitters won’t stall Asiad preparation:PSC
MANILA — The declaration of a State of National Emergency by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will not affect the country’s preparations for the 15th Asian Games.
Philippine Sports Commission chairman William “Butch” Ramirez yesterday said only the athletes who are members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines may be recalled to their respective units as part of the military preparedness.
But after the situation is normalized the athletes who are also enlisted personnel can resume their training for the Asiad to be held in Doha, Qatar in December.
“It’s normal for the AFP to recall all military members to the camps. But we expect everything will to be normalized in just a few days,” said Ramirez. “They are more athletes than a military person,” he added.
More than half of the 800 athletes, who saw action in the 23rd Southeast Asian Games, which the country won via a 113-84-92 medal haul, are enlisted personnel of the AFP and the Philippine National Police.
Private sponsors
And with regards to the prospective private sponsors for Team Philippines, the situation is not dire enough reason for them to back out from supporting the training of the athletes, according to the government sports agency head.
Meanwhile, preparations for the 15th Asian Games is a little bit late already according to Triathlon association of the Philippines president Tom Carrasco, who was the Chief of Mission of the RP delegation in the 2002 Asiad in Busan, South Korea. (FCC)
