Yap leads CPT ’99 to win vs. JV 2002

The ever-consistent Ruben Yap Jr. scored 25 points and had nine rebounds to power Cebu Pacific Transport ’99 to an 80-67 rout of JV Bakeshop 2002 in the Cecaba’s 8th Dr. Chen Lieh Fu Memorial Cup last Thursday at the City Sports Club-Cebu.

In the other game, Donald Anthony Ting erupted for 24 points on top of six rebounds and three steals to help Rocket Battery ’95 crush Techni-Ice 2001, 68-59. Underscoring a balanced attack, three others scored in double figures as Class ’99 improved its win-loss record to 5-1.

Kenneth Noeh Ang had 15 points, Laurence Lauron added 14, and Albert Uy donated 11 markers and 10 rebounds for Class ’99, which whipped up a furious fourth-quarter storm to devastate Class 2002 at the final buzzer.

Spurt

Class ’99 trailed by a hairline entering the last period, 52-53, but Yap and Uy sparked a blistering 28-14 spurt in the windup to knock out Class 2002.

Christopher Boltron had a monster game, finishing with a season-high 29 points and 20 rebounds, but his efforts went for naught as Class 2002 absorbed its sixth defeat with only one win. Later, Joseph James Yu backed up Ting with 12 points, nine rebounds, four steals and three assists as Class ’95 evened its win-loss slate to 3-3.

Class ’95 actually had a cold start that resulted into a nine-point deficit at the end of the first period, 13-22, but found its range in the second quarter where it fired back with a 26-14 run to grab the driver’s seat at halftime, 39-36.

After a see-saw battle in the third canto, Class ’95 went on to ice the match using a game-closing 19-12 run fueled by Ting, Yu, and Dean Dy Teves. Eric Cabana scattered 16 points and 16 rebounds for Class 2001, which further dipped to 1-5.

Class 1999 (80) – Yap 25, Ang 15, Lauron 14, Uy 11, G. Tan 6, T. Tan 5, See 4. Class 2002 (67) – Boltron 29, So 21, Miranda Sy 11, Co 4, Uy 2.

Class 1995 (68) – Ting 24, Yu 12, Ho 8, Dy Teves 8, Angcay 6, Gue 4, Arjona 2, Tiu 2, Gollon 2. Class 2001 (59) – Cabana 16, Racal 11, Liao 10, Gabatan 9, Ong 8, Lao 5.
