Costanilla: Come together for a cause

VOLUNTEERISM. It is heartwarming to note that the spirit of volunteerism among local entertainers isalways alive. You see, a number of them agreed to waive their professional fees in a fund-raising concert aptly titled Hiniusang Sugbo alang sa Habagatang Leyte: Pangaliya ug Huni. It was held last Thursday evening inside the Fuente Osmeña circle despite the uncooperative weather. People came to watch the free show. Solo performers, male dancers, band members, fashion models and a magician were so enthusiastic and in high spirits despite the fact that they were not entitled to receive even a single cent for doing their respective acts onstage. It was an occasion for those talents to personally beg for any amount that the spectators had to shell out for the victims of the recent landslide in Guinsaugon, Southern Leyte. The 10-hour fund-raising production was a tremendous success, thanks to the cooperation of all those performers as well as organizers and sponsors. Some disc jockeys, yours truly and television show host Lou Dayoc emceed the first 5 hours of the show. It was such a very fulfilling task on our part.

COOPERATION. It was actually former Pinoy Big Brother housemate Angela Calina who suggested the staging of the concert for a cause. According to her, when she phoned and texted her co-artists and friends to perform for free, all of them readily accepted her invitation. Angela didn’t have to convince them – she simply told them about the concept and purpose of the fund-raising activity. All of them even assisted her in contacting the rest of the entertainers in town. It was really cooperation at its best.

CONCERT. Magic Melt big boss Boy Donato and realtor Brenda Vasandani are staging a concert for the benefit of the Provincial Women’s Commission. Concert producer Marivir Montebon says the show, aside from being an entertainment treat, is also intended to emphasize the point that Cebuano women are precious human resources and should not be exploited in whatever manner. The concert titled Love Her, Kiss Her is definitely set for staging on March 10, 8 p.m., at the Capitol social hall. Boy and Brenda have promised to come up with your favorite tunes down memory lane but whose theme is generally about women. This writer is their pianist. Incidentally, March is Women’s Month. Aside from Magic Melt, Optima Typographics and Globe Telecom are also behind our upcoming show. For ticketreservations, call or text this writer. Each ticket is only P250.

BROADCASTERS. Edward Abad, Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) Cebu chairman, has vowed to further professionalize the local broadcast industry during his watch. One way of achieving this is to cleanse all local radio stations by going after pseudopractitioners, popularly tagged as ACDCs (attack and collect, defend and collect). These are the people who do not have an accreditation license because either they didn’t take the licensure exam or simply flunked. Unlicensed individuals are not supposed to handle radio programs, especially commentaries. Sadly, however, this situation continues to hound the local KBP. We can only hope that Ed and his co-officers are courageous enough to really cleanse local radio stations. Gutter language is supposed to be taboo inradio programs here. I wish I could give Ed and his co-officers until May this year to go after ACDCs inour midst. They should prove that as KBP leaders here, they have the power to discipline undesirablebroadcasters and dispel talks that the KBP is just a social club.

DRIVER. The driver of the service vehicle of a Capitol legislator suddenly alighted and unceremoniously left his boss in the middle of a heavy traffic. The boss must have said something very hurting to his driver. The provincial official is known for his arrogant ways, which he does not display outside his office.
