BAP nat'l. student finals opens today in Legaspi
LEGASPI City - All is set for the Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP)-organized 60th National Students Basketball Championships kicking off today with 50 teams vying for the various titles at stake.
This was announced yesterday by BAP director for Bicol Julian Lavadia, during a press conference here together with the representatives of Gov. Fernando Gonzalez and Gov. Jesus Typoco, City Mayor Noel Rosal and Mayor Herbie Aguas.
"We will definitely push through as planned despite the coup attempt and the uncertainty of the country's political situation. People here have long been awaiting this big annual basketball event," said Lavadia, who has been tasked to oversee the successful staging of this annual championship held in different cities and municipality in Bicol region.
The participating teams in this event supported by Burlington Socks, Air21 Express, Healthy Options, Summit Mineral Water, Marsho Enterprises and Cebu's Kwarta Padala will draw lots today to the schedule of games.
The college men and women division will open hostilities in Legazpi City and in the municipality of Sto. Domingo, while the high school division will start Tuesday in Daet City.
Mayor Herbie Aguas of Municipality of Sto. Domingo, province of Albay will host the Women College competition. Expected to arrive today are WNCAA Champion AMA Computer University, San Agustin College of Iloilo, Philippine College of Criminology, Philippine Maritime Institute, University of Assumption and 3 teams from the different provinces and the Bicol region.
Albay Governor Fernando Gonzalez and Mayor Noel Rosal of Legazpi City will welcome the Collegiate Men division led by defending champion University Perpetual Help-Rizal and other 15 teams from different regions.
Camarines Norte Governor Jesus Typoco and BAP Provincial Commissioner Dr. Abundio Palencia will welcome the High School Junior Men division led by defending champion Philippine Christian University.
