ML Jewelers subdue PBA Selection, 97-84

THE new squad of the M.Lhuillier Jewelers proved yesterday it can mix it up with some of the best players in the land as the Jewelers beat the PBA/Champions for Christ Selection, 97-84, in an exhibition game held for the benefit of the landslide-stricken town of St. Bernard in Southern Leyte.

The Jewelers recovered from a middle-game slump to withstand the challenge of the PBA/Champions for Christ Selection bannered by Dondon Hontiveros of San Miguel Beer, Purefoods Chunkee Giants Roger YapJr. and John Ferriols in front of the more than 6,000 people at the USC Gym.

Yesterday's game was organized by Hontiveros in cooperation with Sun.Star Cebu and the Jewelers team.

"As a PBA player, I have received a lot of blessings from the Lord, so I want to share them with my countrymen," said Hontiveros, a former University of Cebu Aguila and Cebu Gem in the defunct MBA.

Jewelers coach Raul Alcoseba said the Jewelers team will put up a counterpart fund for what the game generates. The hastily organized affair drew a gross gate receipts of P64,900.

UV Green Lancer mainstay Jayford Rodriguez, who just arrived yesterday after seeing action in the PBFI National Students Basketball Championship in Manila, was the most effective weapon of the Jewelers as he scattered 25 markers including a troika of treys in leading the Jewelers to victory.

Aldrin Ocañada also had a big night for M.Lhuillier, which led the PBA/Champions for Christ Selection, 25-16, at the end of the opening quarter, as he banged in 23 points peppered with five 3-point bombs.

After the initial slump, the PBA/Champions for Christ Selection suddenly woke up in the second period as it used its professional experience in dominating the quarter to take a slim 44-41 halftime edge.

The PBA Selection increased its lead to nine points, 75-66, going into the final canto after Hontiveros exploded from all angles including a breakaway slam at the buzzer.

M.Lhuillier (97) - Rodriguez 25, Ocañada 23, Enriquez 19, Capotulan 14, Piodo 8, Aying 4, Garcia 4. PBA/Champions for Christ Selection (84) - Hontiveros 35, Ferriols 14, Cainglet 9, Capuz 9, Villanil 7, Gonzales 6, Yap 4. Quarterscores: 25-16, 41-44, 66-75, 94-87. (JSV)
