Pusok, Sibonga start out with victories
By Rommel C. Manlosa

BARANGGAY Pusok of Lapu-Lapu City and the Sibonga Softball Club earned wins on opening day of the 2006 Mayors Cup Softball Open tournament at the Labangon Elementary School yesterday.

Brian Berezo scored three runs and Henry and Delfin Ongco had a homer and two run batted ins (RBI) each to lead Pusok batters to a crippling 10-0 win over Lagtang 9.

While the Sibonga batters used a telling nine-run fourth inning to reverse the tide for an 11-3 victory over the San Vicente Padres.

The Pusok batters started the game with a 2-0 lead in the first inning before Henry Ongco made it 4-0 after carrying Joseph Patalinghug to the home plate in the second. Pusok then blew the game wide open when Delfin Ongco hit wide to the left that allowed Berezo and Jimmy Dulce to reach home base for an 8-0 lead. Rey Parpan then took Junito Amit and Edwin Ongco to reach home with an RBI on the final inning for the final score.

RBIs

Sibonga 9, on the other hand, used the RBIs of Randolf Laug Laug, Felix Otok Jr. and Eric Campaña to erect a 10-3 lead after trailing 3-1 in two innings and stayed tough at defense the rest of the way to frustrate the Punta Princesa-based squad.

Laug-Laug had a homer in the first inning but the Padres came back roaring at the top of the fourth inning with Jerry Sanchez hitting at the center and two RBIs, carrying Loklok Rara and Making Tabares to the home base for a 3-1 lead.

However, Sibonga regrouped on its turn at bat with Marlon Chan scoring the first of a nine-run inning. Chan had two runs on the ninth before San Vicente put a stop to its wild defensive misalignment by putting down designated hitter Brandon Ang on his way to the home plate.

The Aldritz Pau Linement vs. Rebels Softball Club and Salazar Colleges of Science and Institute of Technology vs. Berns Ang games were postponed after a heavy Sunday morning rain.

Meanwhile, tournament organizer Dionisio Bacarisas said that they now have a record 14 participating teams with the addition of Lagtang and the Nacario Softball Club yesterday.
