Anti-drugs, sex trade raids By Jovy S. Taghoy Sun.Star Staff Reporter
Cebu City’s red light district was abuzz last Monday night for a different kind of activity.
Combined units of the Cebu City Police Office rounded up 29 persons in a saturation drive in Barangay Kamagayan last Monday night.
Mostly men
Of the 29, mostly men, four were found with 51 ampules of Nubain, a regulated narcotic analgesic or painkiller, while 25 were fined for vagrancy.
The four were identified as Neil R. Limpin, 33, of Barangay Apas; Ricardo N. Solon, 60, of Kamagayan; Eduardo F. Solon, 28, of Barangay Lorega-San Miguel; and Jose Luis Amodia, 45, of Barangay Pasil.
Ricardo Solon admitted selling Nubain as his means of livelihood.
Four illegal gambling machines, including two video carrera units, were also confiscated during the operation.
The policemen failed to arrest the machines’ caretakers.
Insp. George Ylanan, Vice Control Section chief, said the operation was part of the police campaign against Nubain in Kamagayan.
Kamagayan has been identified by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) as one of the barangays in the country where Nubain is illegally sold, Ylanan said.
The 100 personnel from the Vice Control Section, Drug Enforcement Unit, Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Bureau, Special Weapons and Tactics, Crime Suppression Unit and Barangay Intelligence Network, raided the area at 8:30 p.m.
Barangay officials also assisted the police.
Ylanan told reporters yesterday that PDEA 7 is now working with the Dangerous Drugs Board in reclassifying Nubain as illegal drug.
At present, Ylanan said, Nubain is classified as a regulated drug, or something that could not be bought in the pharmacy without a prescription.
