Talisay City loses in Gullas Cup tilt but remains on top

The San Fernando squad dealt the Talisay City cagers their first taste of defeat after the former inked a 91-85 victory over the weekend in the Gullas Cup basketball and volleyball tournaments .

The tandem of Alain delos Santos and Rodelito Sasuman led Talisay City’s scoring onslaught as they combined for 43 points in blasting the top team in the elimination round.

he loss, though, did not alter Talisay’s position atop the heap as its 3-1 win-loss slate is still the best record so far.

Peter Jake Alferez scattered 18 points for Talisay but his efforts weren’t enough to bail his team out of disaster.

In the other game, Minglanilla etched its second win after disposing Sibonga, 96-87, in the curtain-raiser.

With the crowd solidly backing the home team, the Minglanilla cagers utilized their home court advantage to the fullest and led Sibonga from start to finish.

Ronald Abastas and David Anthony wreaked havoc for Minglanilla as they registered 21 and 17 points respectively in leading their team to victory.

Patrick Wong scored 27 points to lead all Sibonga scorers.

In volleyball, the Talisay City women’s team showed their superiority over San Fernando as they kicked out the latter in straight sets, 25-08, and 25-05, to extend their winning roll to four games in the same number of outings.

Minglanilla also tallied a victory in volleyball after subduing Sibonga in two sets, 25-16, 25-10, to score its second win in three games.

In men’s volleyball, Talisay and Minglanilla clobbered their respective rivals to join the other winning teams in the play date.

Talisay tamed San Fernando, 25-11, 25-10, while Minglanilla booted out Sibonga, 25-11, 25-15.

Talisay City (85) — Alferez 18, Colegado 15, Tabar 14, Sunga 12, Iglamo 9, Jagupit 5, Bucao 2, Villaver 2, Cabanero 2, Bardinas 2, Rabaya 2. Quarterscores: 21-24, 50-46, 77-65, 91-85.

Minglanilla (96) — Abastas 21, Brigoli 17, dela Calzada 13, Canonigo 11 Heruela 10, Solis 9, Briones 8, Emphasis 5, Ortega 2. Sibonga (87) — Wong 27, Bungabong 19, Diez 10, Limbaga 9, Alima 7, Ponce 2 Alima K. 2, Ledesma 2, Alegrado 2, Tampos 2. Quarterscores 29-16, 54-36, 73-56, 96-87.
