PCU jrs., St. Clare advance to semis
Daet, Camarines Norte – Defending champion Philippine Christian University Baby Dolphins and 2004 third-placer St. Clare College defeated separate foes in devastating fashion to advance into the semifinal round of the 60th National Inter-Secondary Basketball Championship at the Agro Multi-Purpose Recreational Center here.
The Baby Dolphins routed Cebu’s University of Southern Philippines Baby Panthers, 96-63, to clinch the first semis seat in the 10-team competition organized by the Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP).
Not to be outdone, St. Clare of Caloocan City proved too much for local bet Our Lady of Lourdes College Foundation, 100-79, to enter the round of four with a clean 3-0 slate.
Zamboanga and Iloilo teams
Also advancing into the next round with a similar 3-0 card are Zamboanga City’s Southern City College and Iloilo Central Commercial High School, which took a rest yesterday..
Both St. Clare and Southern City College were still disputing the Group B leadership at press time yesterday, while the Baby Dolphins were scheduled to meet Iloilo Central Commercial High late yesterday to complete the elimination assignments.
But a loss by either of the four will no longer affect their entry into the next round but merely disputing the first and second spots of the of their respective groupings.
Avoid the heavyweights
“It’s still very important matches for the four contending teams because they may be avoiding to meet heavyweight in the semis,” said BAP Provincial Director Abundio Palencia.
The top team in Group A will meet with the second best in Group B, while the pacesetter in Group B will collide with the second-placer in Group A in the crossover semifinal round set to start at 9 a.m. today.
Allan Salansang scored 22 points and Paolo Guidaben made 17 as the Baby Dolphins, who dethroned multi-titled San Beda Red Cubs for the crown last year in Dumaguete City, limited the Baby Panthers to only 22 points in the opening half.
Eugene Torres had a game-high 39 points, 21 in the second canto, to lead St. Clare’s well-oiled offense against local-favorite Our Lady of Lourdes, which remains winless in three matches. (FCC)
