CCCI, TIBFI inks MOA on tourism

THE Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) and Tourism Industry Board Foundation Inc. (TIBFI) signed a memorandum of agreement to establish an assessment and certification program for workers in the tourism sector.

Ted Locson, CCCI board member, said the program will have different training modules, such as housekeeping, commercial cooking, tour guiding and travel services.

The program, which will kick off in May, will increase the “employability” of certified workers for current tourism practitioners and new graduates.

It will also help employers find skilled workers, Locson said.

Tourism-related sectors include hotels and resorts, food and beverage outlets, travel and tour operators, education and training institutions, among others.

The CCCI will serve as the local industry body that will help oversee the project in Cebu with TIBFI, a group composed of private, government and labor representatives in the tourism industry.

TIBFI chairperson Danny Edralin said tourism is a “repeat” kind of business.

Competitive

“Tourists or customers will come back only if they like your service. Our staff and tourism workers should be skilled for them to be competitive,” he said.

He said Cebu is the first among local industries that will implement the standards and certification program funded by the Australian government.

Locson also noted that the certification program will help low income families that cannot send their children to a university for a four-year course.

“A high school graduate can take this module and eventually qualify for a job, depending on the need and requirement of the industry,” he said. (ALC)
