A policeman from the Lapu-Lapu City Police Station died after he was accidentally shot by a fellow policeman while responding to an alarm last Tuesday night.

PO3 Rodrigo B. Ungria, who was detailed at the Precinct 4 of the Lapu-Lapu City Police Station, died minutes after he was taken to the Mactan Doctors Hospital.

He was bleeding from a gunshot wound in the left leg.

Ungria and PO3 Roland Pugoy were sent to Barangay Basak, Lapu-Lapu City around 6 p.m. after receiving a call for assistance against an armed person.

The man was later identified as Joseph Brent Chiong of Barangay Pajac.

When the two officers arrived in the area, Ungria approached Chiong, who was with friends, and informed him about the complaint.

Chiong allegedly resisted and tried to grapple for Ungria’s gun.

According to the report, Ungria and Chiong wrestled with each other and crashed into Pugoy.

Pugoy’s 5.56 M-4 carbine rifle accidentally went off, hitting Ungria’s leg.

It was Pugoy who rushed Ungria to the Mactan Doctors Hospital.

Lapu-Lapu City Police Station Chief Louie Oppus placed Pugoy under camp restriction while an investigation is being conducted.

Chiong, on the other hand, is now detained.
