Chiongbian: World-class health club in Cebu
By Edgar R. Chiongbian

Private club members are very unique in that many like to do volunteer work without pay. Of course, if you get the right high position, it can be very gratifying and can offer its own honor and privileges but not monetary, yet a few still like to hang on to it. Getting an important position is one thing but being house chairman and activities chairman can be challenging and can cost you some friends if you’re not careful.

Then there’s the secondary level of management, like the golf committees, whose sole purpose is to look into the functions of the club to insure that members’ views are being considered and that’s why this position is open only to members. However, there is one club that has some positions assigned to the GM – an employee of the club. I’m not sure if this is effective but since the GM is also a member, I guess there is no real conflict in its original idea. Conflict of interest, maybe but with alls well that ends-well scenario, what is there to say.

The popularity of private clubs is its privacy and in belonging to a select group of people. That is why the incident mentioned in my column, when a member brought in a guest expelled from the club got another diehard member so roused up because I was too nice and did not express the severity of the offense. He felt that the member who brought the unworthy guest, deliberately and maliciously did so to provoke the members and the club. He added that this guy should have been suspended or deserves to lose his membership for doing so.

There is a private club that is open to the public and it is called Holiday Spa in their Banilad location. All I can say is wow. This place has a real club facility that serves the members and clientele directly. It beats out many international health clubs in other countries. I have seen very many and I can fairly say that we have a topnotch club right here. We call these clubs spas but outside our country, they call them health clubs because it is for your health that you go there. In our vain Filipino thinking, it’s a spa because it is a place to beautify oneself.

Five thousand square meters of indoor facility with gym, massage rooms, running track, huge swimming pool and badminton courts, etc. It is simply amazing. When I went there at about 6:30 p.m. one day, the place was crawling with people. The badminton courts are the best with rubberized flooring and offer the cheapest rate in town. No wonder the place is always packed.

The best part is that you don’t have to be a member to use their facility. Come as a walk-in and use everything except the gym. But if you must, just pay the day rate of P350 and you’re unrestricted and go everywhere. Don’t wait too long, the price might go up and you lose the chance to experience a first-class spa/health club.

Zonta Clubs of Cebu I and II supporters must not forget that the 4th Z-Cup Golf tournament at Cebu Country Club on April 5-6 is on a Wednesday and Thursday. This tournament is followed on Friday and Saturday by the UBS golf tournament. There’s no reason why you can’t play both tournaments because it is only day to play, just space yourself with a rest day.

GOLF TIP: Proper set-up can mean everything to your game. Generally, you are not supposed to think about anything mechanical when you’re playing. But you can help your swing with good set-up pointers. 1) Left ear behind the ball – This will key you to place more weight behind the ball or on your right side. 2) Left hip up and forward – The ideal address position is to have your spine tilting back slightly, away from the target. 3) Arms like rope – tension is the biggest power killer, so try to let your arms hang loosely from your shoulders.

Putting set-up can be very similar – Let your arms hang down naturally, where they are the most comfortable. Next, bring your hands up to the grip but don’t put extra strain on your muscles. Your arms should be relaxed not tight and your grip pressure fairly firm. From there, simply rock your shoulders back and through.
