Gordon’s bill gets support of CCCI
The Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) has submitted a position paper supporting Senate Bill 2138 or the proposed “Tourism Act of 1995,” authored by Sen. Richard Gordon.
While supporting the proposed tourism bill, the CCCI’s tourism core group (TCG), composed of various tourism stakeholders in Cebu, is also proposing amendments to lessen the impact of the bill’s provisions on the local tourism industry.
Oppose
Certain provisions of the bill, particularly the $5 “tourism fee,” is being opposed by certain groups.
“While the Hotel, Resorts and Restaurants Association of Cebu (HRRAC), an active member of the TCG, totally opposes the imposition of a tourism fee as provided for in Section 51 (of the bill), majority of the other members present agreed (but) proposed (a) revision to lessen the tourism fee to $2 to be collected from foreign guests per night in accommodation establishments,” the CCCI said in a statement, a copy of which was furnished to Sun.Star Cebu.
The CCCI said the amount of the fee may be initially fixed and can be revised from time to time by the board. In determining and reviewing the fee, the tourism board should consider the level of accreditation of the establishment, its location and its market, it added.
With regard the elected directors of the Tourism Congress as provided for in Section 43 of the bill, the CCCI proposes that equal representation from the Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao stakeholders be ensured. (JBN)
