Realtors nail first win

Sta. Lucia finally barged into the win column of the Gran Matador Brandy PBA Philippine Cup after the Realtors salvaged a thrilling 102-100 victory over the Air21 Express at the Cuneta Astrodome yesterday.

After back-to-back defeats in the All-Filipino conference, the Realtors found the formula to win as they recovered from 15 points down in the second quarter to steal the victory from the Express.

Dennis Espino made the biggest impact for the boys of Sta. Lucia coach Alfrancis Chua after he scattered a total of 24 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and issued six assists to snare the Best Player of the Game award.

Kenneth Duremdes had a game-high 30 points for Sta. Lucia but did not finish the game after hurting his right foot on a freak accident in the last five minutes of play.

The game set a record in the number of combined double-double games with seven. Aside from Espino, also logging double-double scores were Chester Tolomia with 11 points and 10 rebounds and Marlou Aquino (11-10) of Sta. Lucia, and Air21’s Ranidel de Ocampo (10-10), his brother Yancy (14-10), Mark Telan (12-11) and Niño Cañeleta, who had a career-high 19 points on top of 10 rebounds.

Winning basket

The league started recording double-double games three years ago.

Tolomia sank the winning basket of the game after he made a follow-up shot in the dying seconds to tally the Realtors’ final score.

The Express of coach Bo Perasol were ahead, 98-93, after Ranidel de Ocampo and Cañaleta buried four successive free throws in the last two minutes and 53 seconds of the game.
