Chiongbian: March madness By Edgar R. Chiongbian Teetime
The month of March means a lot of things to a lot of people. It is the time for elections in private clubs, time for school finals, time for graduation and time for club championships. Yes, club championships. I’m not sure why we play them in March but I think it has to do with the summer.
The US school system has the school term ending in May, which is also in time for summer. So I guess it goes for golf too.
By the way, Payless shoppers, the best time to play golf in the United States is during the summer months when all expensive private golf courses drop their green fees by 50 to 70 percent. Public courses also lower their rates almost for the same price as an order of burger, fries and 16-ounce soft drink. They even throw in a golf cart for almost a song. Not bad at all.
As luck would have it, it is actually when their fairways and greens are at their best because of the summer grass. In Cebu, no such luck in the summer but you do get long yardage with your driver at no extra charge, courtesy of rock-hard fairways and hardpans.
In the last few years, the schedule for the Men’s club championship has been floating between April and June. I suspect it has to do with the jungolfers who are qualified to play in the club championships but are still in school. Yes, we have crowned many jungolf alumni already in the Men’s championship but no jungolfers yet. So where’s the beef? It is about experience and exposure so when these little guys get out of school, they will be able to reach the crown.
Well, it is different in the Ladies chapter. There, the jungolfers dominate the field. From the Hongs to the Uys, then to the Wongs and back to the Uys; maybe next, the Oleas. The Ladies chapter at Cebu Country Club and Alta Vista mean business and don’t worry about a thing. They run the schedule and see who comes to the top. No ifs and/or buts.
So last Wednesday and Thursday, the CCC Ladies let everybody loose and without complication, everyone made a run for the monthly medal, club championship and election of officers in two days. In two days they got the Best Players of the Month, the Best Players of the Year and the best officers for the next year. Now, isn’t that nice.
The first day was the monthly medal with scores to count toward the next days score for the club championships. The election was carried out during the awarding and now they have a brand-new spanking set of officers: president Mila Chan, VP/tournament chair Cely Chiongbian, secretary Helen Yap, treasure Eva Hino, director Flor Streegan and director Jennette Chiu. Ada Martinez, who served the Ladies chapter very well as president for three years, has earned a well-deserved rest.
Congratulations to club-champion Kathleen Uy and overall lowest net winner Kriztine Uy – net 62.5; Class-A champ Abby Olea – net 69.5 and second-runner-up Yoko Akimoto – net 71; Class B champion Cely Chiongbian – net 64 and second runner-up Vicky Moraza – net 64.5. Lowest gross in the monthly medal went to Abby Olea – 77; lowest net to Vicky Moraza – 66.
Class-A champion Nena Dyguani – net 70 and second-runner-up Mercy Bejar – net 70. Class-B champion Cely Chiongbian – net 66 and second runner-up Jo Veloso – net 71.
GOLF TIP: Chip it close like Retief Goosen. When the landing on the green is tight, he likes to land it before the green using a hook chip. Take a 7-iron and run it up with a low running shot. Make a very narrow stance, the heels 2-3 inches apart with the ball just opposite your left big toe.
Angle the shaft forward – toward the target with your hands ahead of the clubhead. Swing the clubhead back inside and as the club approaches impact, roll your wrists slightly so the face points left of the target in your follow-through. The club will release, imparting a left to right spin and come out with more overspin and plenty of roll. (erc@skyinet.net)
