CV cops raise alert status, over NPA threat

THE Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 declared a full alert status throughout Central Visayas, following an alleged threat from New People’s Army (NPA) rebels to stage daily attacks against the government.

The alert status was downgraded to heightened alert yesterday morning, but police are under orders to continue to be on the lookout for suspicious activities.

The PRO 7, through acting Regional Operations and Plans Division Chief Rey Lyndon Lawas, issued a memorandum declaring a full alert status as of 8 a.m. Saturday.

Lawas ordered city and provincial directors and heads of national and local support units to intensify their intelligence gathering to preempt rebel and terrorist attacks.

He also directed them to check the security of vital installations and key economic establishments in their areas of responsibility.

Suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebel leader Jerry Badayos was laid to rest at the Calamba Cemetery yesterday afternoon.

Badayos, who was slain in an encounter with military and police operatives, was identified as the secretary of the NPA’s Central Visayas Regional Party Committee Front 2.

He was killed alongside fellow suspected rebel Guillermo Alburo in Barangay Dalid, Tabuelan.

His stepfather, Jigger Geverola, was reportedly allowed to attend the funeral.

Radio dyAB, in its noontime newscast yesterday, reported that Geverola was able to secure a court order allowing him to attend the funeral. He was released at noon yesterday but was ordered to return to the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center hours later. (MEA)
