Exporters’ group to provide productivity consultation
A group made up of toy and houseware manufacturers in Cebu vowed to focus on helping the industry improve productivity.
Jenifer Cruz, president of Gifts, Toys and Houseware Manufacturers and Exporters Association (Cebu GTH), said the group will begin a consultancy program on product development and design, operations management and productivity improvement to members.
During the group’s general membership meeting, Cruz said Cebu GTH will continue to strengthen the industry by recruiting new members and enhancing the delivery of services, among others.
Challenging
“(While) we pursued new opportunities, the first three months of the year was very challenging for Cebu-GTH,” he said.
He said Cebu-GTH’s participation in Ambiente in Frankfurt, Germany was “successful and a breakthrough” as the group applied directly with the event organizer without going through the European Chamber of Commerce in the Philippines.
“Cebu-GTH was the first export organization in the Philippines to be accepted by Messe Frankfurt GmbH, the organizer of Ambiente and Tendence Lifestyle — the two biggest trade shows in the world,” he said.
First
The signing of the memorandum of agreement (MOA) with Philippine Export-Import Cre-dit Agency (Philexim) also made Cebu-GTH the first organization in the country that Philexim is working with for their credit programs.
“Another first in the history of Cebu-GTH is being the pilot organization for clustering consultancy with the Canadian Executive Services Organization,” he said.
Seven companies underwent capability assessment, technical training workshop on design and one-on-one consultancy on materials manipulation, he said.
“A follow through on product development and design consultancy is scheduled in September,” he added.
The Cebu-GTH, like the rest of the export industry, is facing challenges related to certain government re-gulations, such as the Customs Brokers Act of 2004 and Executive Order 502, which bans the harvesting, gathering, buying and selling of abaca.
Cebu-GTH members also suffered losses as a result of the strengthening of the peso, Cruz said.
But overall, Cebu-GTH was able to achieve a lot, he said. (ALC)
