Group seeks recognition of exams
The private-sector led Cebu Educational Development Foundation for Information Technology (Cedf-it) has been negotiating with different companies and institutions that conduct certification examinations in information technology (IT) to recognize Cedf-it’s competency examination.
Cedf-it has been developing the Philippine IT General Certification Examination (Phil-IT GCE), which will be administered initially to IT graduates in Cebu, Cedf-it executive director Bonifacio Belen said.
Phil-IT GCE is a set of examinations based on standards developed by Cedf-it, in collaboration with the itpros.ph and the European IT Service Center.
Belen said Cedf-it has been talking with IT certification bodies, such as the Japanese IT Standards Examination, to ensure that its examinations are recognized as valid measurements of an IT professional’s knowledge and abilities.
Higher level
Belen said the online examination is one way of pushing Cebu’s IT industry to a higher level.
“The certification will encourage IT schools to work hard on increasing the quality of IT learning because they will have to ensure that their IT graduates will pass the certification. It will also push our IT students to study and learn IT by heart to pass the exam,” he said on the sidelines of Cedf-it’s quarterly forum at the City Sports Club Cebu last Tuesday.
Require
Belen said Cedf-it’s member-companies, such as Lexmark International Inc., Cebu Property Ventures and Development Corp. and NEC Telecom Software Phils., have recognized the Phil-IT CGE. As such, they will require their future IT employees to pass the examination, he added.
The IT graduates of Cedf-it’s member-schools — University of San Carlos, University of Cebu, University of San Jose Recolletos, Cebu Institute of Technology, University of Southern Philippines and University of the Visayas — would soon take the Phil-IT GCE.
Cedf-it signed an agreement with Next IX, the company that will provide technical assistance to Cedf-it for the paperless exam.
“The exam makes use of technology. Each examinee will have a different set of questions and the computer will automatically shut off after three hours. The result of the examination will also be available a few minutes after the exam,” he said.
Cedf-it is a multisectoral group composed of the academe, business sector and government agencies. (JBN)
