Cebu on heightened alert

The Cebu Provincial Police Office (CPPO) placed the province under heightened alert, anticipating attacks by New People’s Army (NPA) rebels.

The NPA celebrated its 37th founding anniversary yesterday.

CPPO Director Vicente Loot said in a press conference yesterday that he issued a directive to all police stations to secure their areas, especially the “high-risk municipalities” in the northern part of Cebu.

Loot said an additional 20 policemen have been assigned to these towns, including Sogod, Catmon and Tabuelan.

Sightings

He said police are monitoring reported rebel sightings in the mountains in northern Cebu.

“(The sightings) could be a diversionary tactic,” Loot said. He said he had been receiving reports that police stations will be targeted.

Loot advised residents in the province not to be alarmed whenever they see policemen carrying long firearms. “We are just taking defensive measures,” he said.

He said police stations have been told to check any government official or employee before allowing them into the station.

Loot said there have been incidents where rebels overran a police station by pretending to be government officials. (JST)
