Editorials: Mayor Cesante’s point
Cebu Mayors’ League president Ronald Allan Cesante, being from the town of Dalaguete, apparently knows the mindset of rural folk better than urban-bred Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña.
So when he said that there’s no need for Osmeña to lure people away from Metro Cebu by holding festivals in the towns during the Asean summit here in December, one should put some weight to it.
In Cesante’s view, since Malacañang has already declared a four-day holiday during the summit, then usual behavior would dictate that those temporarily residing in Metro Cebu would head back to their hometowns/provinces for a vacation.
“The holidays have been declared,” Cesante said, “so I think there’s no need nga tudloan ang mga tawo asa sila moadto.”
Actually, it’s not only Cesante who is not that excited about the festival suggestion and by the same token Osmeña’s offer of P100,000 for each Cebu municipality for the holding of such activity.
Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia said she still has to study the proposal, which is not as enthusiastic a reaction as accepting the offer outright.
But this could be for the good of Cebu City; at least it may no longer have to shell P4.9 million for festivals whose contribution to the effort to keep the peace during the Asean summit is still debatable.
Jolt for the prosecution
The order of Regional Trial Court Judge Geraldine Faith Econg that considered 36 items as “inadmissible as evidence” in the parricide case against Ruben Ecleo Jr. has, as expected jolted those pushing for the conviction of the accused.
While the move does not necessarily mean Ecleo’s acquittal is a certainty, it should prod the prosecution to re-assess the manner it is handling the case.
Experience has shown that it is when the public seems to have forgotten about this important case that the twists---sometimes positive, sometimes negative for the prosecution---occur.
The prosecution should have realized by now that in this case it cannot afford to be lax, lose concentration or be haphazard not only because the judge demands it but more so because the defense is apparently not cooling its heels, too.
Besides, the outcome of this case could either weaken or strengthen people’s faith in the judicial system.
