Ozamiz starts season by thumping Pagadian
Ozamiz City – Ozamiz Cotta sent a strong message to the rest of the field as it flaunted its much-vaunted firepower in a 108-97 win Tuesday night over expansion team Pagadian Explorers at the Gov. Angel Medina Sr. Gym in the NBC National Championship.
Ozamiz-native Gerry Cavan fired 5-of-9 from the 3-point territory as the defending national champions shot 12-of-31 in that area en route to breaching the century mark, the first time it happened this season.
Even the arrival of main-gunner Peter Naron, who is fresh off an import stint in the Indonesian Basketball League, could not save the Explorers from absorbing their second straight loss in as many starts.
The Cotta Shrine cagers opened a 13-point lead, 29-16, in the first period and never looked back as Pagadian helplessly tried to catch up the rest of the way.
Cavan, who transferred in the off-season from cross-town rival Iligan Crusaders, added two rebounds, two steals and two assists as four more other Ozamiz players joined him in the scoring fray.
Lanky slotman Marlon Basco led Ozamiz with 21 points and nine rebounds but veteran Billy Bansil stole the spotlight as he had a huge double-double of 14 points and the same number of rebounds on top of five assists, two steals and a block to claim Best Player of the Game honors.
Allan Salangsang also had a scintillating debut in the country’s premier regional basketball league with the former Talk N’ Text Phone Pal registering 13 points for Ozamiz.
Ping Daja’s second-quarter outburst rallied Pagadian to within three, 42-39, but that proved to be the closest Pagadian could get as Ozamiz bombarded it with a barrage of 3-pointers.
The identical 27-point effort of ex-pros Bong Marata and Naron went down the drain as only Daja, who had 17 markers, supported them.
Action resumes tomorrow as the Iloilo Warriors mark their debut this season hosting the dangerous Valencia Golden Harvest.
The league’s third season is supported by Panasonic, Sulpicio Lines, Nature’s Spring Mineral Water, Regent Foods, Firefly Lightings, Spring Cooking Oil, Molten and Prime Channel.
